Drilling Modelling
The objective of the extended reach drilling course is to provide sufficient knowledge to experienced drilling personnel to allow them to balance the risks related to planning and executing a challenging high angle, horizontal, extended reach or complex wells. Importantly, the key risk factors and mitigation measures for stuck pipe avoidance from a well design, planning and operational execution perspective are covered in depth.
This course provides significant detail on key well planning challenges and proven success factors, allowing delegates multiple opportunities to review and assess real-world case studies. This course is relevant for all high angle drilling projects, particularly in challenging environments.
3- or 5-day options available, in person or online instructor-led.
Delivered in English or Spanish.
Drilling Surveillance
The objective of the extended reach drilling course is to provide sufficient knowledge to drilling personnel to allow them to manage drilling risks at the execution stage. This reduced duration format has less engineering content and fewer exercises. It is ideal for operations personnel or a combined group of engineering and operations personnel to gain alignment on operational risks and practices to mitigate the risks before drilling starts.
1- or 2-day options available, in person or online instructor-led.
Delivered in English or Spanish.
ERD Evolution
The objective of the stuck pipe prevention course is to ensure that all personnel involved in the drilling operation understand their role in reducing the risk of a stuck pipe event. The course is designed to provide a thorough understanding of the main sticking mechanisms and the associated risk factors. The course explains what is happening downhole when the stuck pipe risk is increasing and how to respond effectively to avoid a stuck pipe event or at least ensure it is a temporary event.
1- or 2-day options available, in person or online instructor-led.
Delivered in English or Spanish.
Free stuck pipe handbook for every delegate.

MPD
The objective of this course is to provide drilling engineering personnel with the knowledge required to understand how drilling vibrations are generated in the drilling environment, including excitation and attenuation modes. The course includes how to identify different modes of vibrations and how they influence drilling operations, including casing running. Mitigation measures are also covered in some detail.
1-day course, in person.
Delivered in English.
Stuck Pipe
The objective of the geomechanics for drilling engineers course is to provide experienced drilling personnel with an understanding of all aspects of drilling related geomechanics. The course is designed to ensure delegates are provided with a sufficient level of knowledge to allow them to account for wellbore stability related factors at the well planning stage and to diagnose and respond to wellbore instability at the execution stage.
The course is intended to be of practical use with a focus on real-world examples and case studies rather than the maths behind geomechanics.
3- or 4-day options available, in person or online instructor-led.
Delivered in English or Spanish.
Tripping
The objective of the MPD course is to provide flexible training options for both entry-level and experienced personnel. The basic course is ideal for individuals with no or limited MPD knowledge, offering a primer on MPD techniques and their applications to support participation in planning discussions and readiness for advanced training. The advanced course is designed for experienced personnel who have worked on MPD projects and require deeper understanding of MPD methods, as well as the engineering and operational aspects critical to executing safe and efficient MPD operations.
1- or 3-day options available, in person or online instructor-led.
Delivered in English or Spanish.
Wellbore Stability
The objective of the HPHT course is to provide drilling engineering personnel with the knowledge required to understand the design requirements of an HPHT well and how this is reflected in the equipment required to safely and efficiently drill, complete and test the well. Each day of the training focusses on a different area, with day 1 setting the scene as to why HPHT wells are required and the physical behavior of the system, day 2 develops key well design criteria, day 3 focusses on rig and equipment, day 4 on well operations and day 5 specifically on testing and completion engineering and operational activity.
5-day course, in person.
Delivered in English.
Tailored to each project, for each team
Pre- and Post-Course Assessment
Assessment is fundamental to gauge the level of understanding of each topic and measure the level of learning throughout the course. Merlin provides a detailed report with the assessment results, highlighting areas of strength and where further development may be required.
Experienced Trainers
Merlin courses are taught by industry experts each of whom has 20 years’ ERD/complex well experience. The team is led by Engineering Director, Neil Armstrong.
Training Material Access
All delegates retain access to Merlin’s training material after all courses, providing a valuable on-going resource via our online training platform.
Flexible Course Content
Course content can be modified to suit individual programs, including case studies based on the risk profile of your project/well. The trainer can also be present at the DWOP to present the risk factors and mitigations.
