Friday Haggler

The left-hand side of the picture below shows a torque profile plot for a well with a 2-D horizontal reservoir section (TD at 22,000 ft MD) and an insert showing the plan view of the well profile. The torque profile plot shows the 2-D well 7-7/8” hole section rotating off bottom torque (OBT) at TD is 16 kft.lbs (0.2 FF). The right-hand side of the picture shows the 3-D profile and plan view of a U-Turn Lateral well, that is the same as the 2-D well, other than the 7 – 10° per 100 ft turn (TD is also at 22,000 ft MD). Other well information is shown on the torque profile chart parameters box.

Estimate / guess the rotating off bottom torque at TD for the U-Turn Lateral well, assuming the same FF will be seen at TD as on the 2-D well. Also, why would you want to drill a U-Turn lateral?

a) 18 kft.lbs
b) 22 kft.lbs
c) 28 kft.lbs
d) 30 kft.lbs
e) No change
