Merlin ERD adds Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD) capability with the appointment of Stuart McCallum

Merlin ERD, an independent, industry leading and employee-owned complex well engineering consultancy has taken the next step in its ambitious growth plan by welcoming Stuart McCallum into the team based in Perth, Scotland.

Stuart joins Merlin as Engineering Manager for MPD services. He has relocated from Kuala Lumpur, where he was Weatherford’s Regional Operations Manager for the Asia Pacific region, managing all Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD), Underbalanced Drilling (UBD) and Pressurised Mud Cap Drilling (PMCD) operations in Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Brunei, Vietnam, Indonesia and Australia.

Stuart has a wealth of experience in the operating and service company community having been in the oil and gas industry for over 27 years and exclusively involved in MPD engineering and operations since 1997. His experience ranges from edge of the envelope deep-water & jack up MPD campaigns, to remote desert land operations in the Middle East.

Stuart has previously worked for companies including Schlumberger, Northlands/Precision, DONG (Denmark) & MPD consultants Blade Energy where he has managed MPD operations all over the world. Technical highlights include integrating the first DNV certified offshore MPD package on to a jack up for a 5 well HPHT development campaign in Denmark, as the operator’s sole MPD subject matter expert.

Merlin ERD’s Managing Director, Ron Ramage commented “From our initial interaction with Stuart it was clear that he was the right person to lead the development of this new service for Merlin. Stuart’s combination of technical expertise, practical project delivery skills and business acumen convinced the team that he would be a great fit. We are looking forward to demonstrating how MPD, as an enabling technology, can help existing and new clients reliably drill more complex and challenging wells.”

Stuart said “Merlin has a clear vision as to how their methodology and process, which assures success in extended reach and high angle wells, could be applied to projects requiring the use of MPD and associated technologies to maximise project value for clients. I was keen to take on the challenge of building this capability, utilising Merlin’s industry expertise and reputation to support and extend their core service offering. We are all focussed on the same purpose – doing the best job we can for the client.”

2020 was a busy year for Merlin, despite the challenges, and this year shows no signs of slowing down. In addition to consolidating its position in current markets and the America’s, along with the recently released TDH software, Merlin ERD will be focussing on MPD service development in engineering consultancy, training, and operations support. The business is also looking forward to revisiting plans to increase participation within the alternative energy space as the year progresses.
