By Engineers, For Engineers

Merlin is focused on delivery assurance for extended reach and complex wells.  Supporting our clients with software to model torque, drag and hydraulics (TDH) was an advance which naturally fit with the company ethos.  The goal: to create user-friendly software, with flexible, easy-to-interpret output reports.

The TDH development cycle was multifaceted; refining algorithms, interfaces and outputs, coding and then validating model results against real-world data in the field.

Solution-focused Approach

With our in-house software development competency, Merlin can adapt or modify TDH for you. Need to model a novel tool’s impact on torque, drag or hydraulics? We’ve built complex integrated models with single click optimization solutions on tool placement for clients using TDH as an engine. TDH’s business logic – the conceptual and data structures behind the user interface are being used by a national operator to leapfrog traditional development timelines when implementing a full torque, drag and hydraulics modelling solution in their own bespoke well planning software.

Clients are saving time and cost using our validated models to avoid the tedious and rigorous assurance testing required to validate inputs against outputs against reality, whilst benefitting from best-in-class data presentation. Talk to us if you are considering building your own software or would like to understand how using ours can help you.

Bespoke Development and Growth

Most operators and service providers recognise the benefits of accurate torque, drag and hydraulics analysis, but the initial investment in developing, maintaining, and evolving a software solution raises issues of time and resource.  Our team spent six months developing a bespoke version of TDH for a multi-national client, addressing challenges relating to placement and optimisation of tools in the drill string.  Following successful user acceptance testing, TDH software is deployed to their field engineers on multiple projects.

This model of flexible customisation has also been used to support an NOC, integrating Merlin TDH business logic into their existing well planning tool suite.

The development team are supported by engineers with a broad range of well construction and field experience.  This, along with a research and development capability, ideas from users and queries from prospective clients, allows us to evolve and enhance the software or develop stand alone packages if required.

One of the many benefits of Merlin’s TDH Software is our flexible output chart functionality. There’s no point building a model and then not using it to proactively manage your drilling performance, and how we visualise what we create can be the difference between failure and success. Our tools allow you to understand what you are modelling or measuring – quickly and simply.
